Organic Farming

organic, bio-dynamic, and sustainable farming

We are the only farm in Namibia run along bio-dynamic lines. This means that the principles we follow are ecologically and socially sound and sustainable. Another thing that makes us special is the farm’s diversity. Come for a farm tour and see what mixed farming means.

Agriculture

Agricultural production at Krumhuk, which is fully bio-dynamic, is divided into the following areas:

  • Dairy farming

  • Cow breeding

  • Vegetable and herb cultivation

  • Fodder cultivation and hayfields

Our breeding cows graze free-range all year over the whole farm.

In order to farm successfully you need water. We get our water from bore-holes or by storing rainwater in reservoirs. Water shortage is a daily issue, and the main limiting factor in any plan for expansion. Our thinking for the future is in the direction of renewable energy and innovations such as “rainwater-harvesting” or an effective waste water treatment system.

Krumhuk Farm is already as much as 70% self-sufficient.

Farm Produce

The farm offers a range of bio-dynamic products (certified ‘organic’), such as milk, quark (cottage cheese), vegetables, and meat, available direct from the farmhouse. We also make our own oven-baked bread!

The farm produce is on sale at the Green Market in Klein-Windhoek, local grocery stores, and a delivery box.

THE PRINCIPLES

Biodynamic agriculture sustains and nurtures the soil, plants, animals and humans. The farmers conscientiously balance all these areas in a healthy cycle on the farm.

Pioneering since 1924

The foundation for biodynamic agriculture was set in 1924 by Rudolf Steiner. He realized that a holistic new understanding of nature was necessary for a sustainable agriculture. Since then biodynamic agriculture principles have helped to shape organic agriculture worldwide.

Sustainability

Comparing long-term studies (FiBL) have shown the impact of biodynamic agriculture: biodynamic farming systems protect resources and do not pollute the environment. Also the largest biodiversity and biotope density can be found in biodynamic plots.

Individuality

The coexistence of humans, animals, plants in a certain place, under given conditions of soil and climate is different everywhere. In biodynamic agriculture, every farm and every garden nursery is understood as an organism and therefore designed individually by each farmer.

Working with the Cosmos

The earth ‘breathes’ in cosmic rhythms: Day and night, ascending and descending moon, ebb and flow of tides, the seasons. Biodynamic farmers take these rhythms into account and plan the work, from sowing to care and harvesting, around the changing earth.

Vital Soil

In biodynamic agriculture special natural soil fertilizers stimulate the forces in soil and plants. Well-known natural fertilizers include the horn manure and the horn silica preparation or plant-made fertilizer and compost additives.

Animals

Biodynamic agriculture prescribes animal husbandry principles and with that a consistent material cycle. Special value is placed on species-appropriate livestock farming. For example, biodynamic cows keep their horns and are regularly out in the pasture. The calves receive only the milk of the cows from the farm.
